FULL NAME Leonard Owen Tatting AGE 17. BIRTHDATE Febuary 2nd, 2005. ZODIAC Aquarius. The stereotypical geeks of the magical world, Ravenclaw Aquarians are noted mostly for their genius. They are gifted theorists and inventors, and highly talented students. Most wind up doing pure research after graduating from Hogwarts. Their noses are always in books of esoteric lore. Some people may laugh at them, either for their unconventional lifestyles or (more commonly) because they are obvious nerds, but they don't care. While they can have sharp tempers, especially when they encounter ignorance or stupidity, these wizards generally mean well, and have a "live and let live" philosophy. Their wit is legendary; not everybody gets the Ravenclaw Aquarian's jokes, but those who are subtle and intelligent enough find conversation with an Aquarian Ravenclaw to be quite funny, in a satirical and ironic and irreverent sort of way. HOUSE/SCHOOL & YEAR Ravenclaw/Hogwarts; 7th BLOODLINE Halfblood. [Pureblood father, halfblood mother; Note to mods: I know "Tatting" is not specifically identified as a pure name, I would like to make the argument that since Narcissa considered it a high end shoppe in my interpretation that it was most likely owned by purebloods. But if this is a problem I'm willing to change it.] SEXUALITY Heterosexual despite other popular theories. CHARACTER JOURNAL
APPEARANCE
HAIR COLOR Very dark brown. EYE COLOR Brown. HEIGHT 180 cm [5'11 in] WEIGHT 170 lbs GENERAL DESCRIPTION Being the son of the man who own Twilfit and Tatting's, it would be off for him to be dressed in anything less than the nicest robes. So Leo's clothes are always high end and professional looking. His hair, however, he can't seem to figure out what to do with. As a result, he doesn't really do much. He attempts to comb it and make it look presentable but it doesn't behave well and ends up sticking up and out in ways he didn't intend. As far as attractiveness, he's about average. Not ugly, not particularly handsome but if he didn't scowl and look so annoyed all the time he might be able to pass for cute. Though he's quite pale and skinny which would be a turn off for some people. PLAYED BY Jay Baruchel

PREFECT/HEAD The only reason why Leo might not be chosen as a prefect is because he takes it too seriously. If anything, he exudes the typical quality of a Prefect more intensely than most people would want. Long before Fifth Year Leo ha been known as a tattle-tale. His attitude towards maintaining order and the rules is incredibly rigid. But not only is he qualified for the job, very few things will slip through the cracks if Leo has something to do with it. He makes up for his lack of likeableness and strict policies with diligence and setting a pristine example for other students. And though he is very much a stickler, by the letter interpreter of the rules, he IS fair and does a good job of not let his opinion or emotions cloud his judgment. If it's not clear by now, I would really really like Leo to be Prefect!! QUIDDITCH Leo definitely would not have tried out. WAND Leo actually has had several wands over the years due his mother's theory that a different wand with rarer components might improve his conjuring abilities. His first wand was a Cedar, dragonheart string, 11 1/2 inches, reasonably springy. He got his second wand his Third Year which was a Redwood, phoenix feather, 7 inches, firm/not pliable. His Sixth Year he got his final wand, Honduras rosewood, 14 inches, Demiguise hair, incredibly rigid. He uses the last one most frequently since it was the most expensive but hasn't noticed any improvement in his conjuring skills. If anything, he thinks changing wands just added more variable to the equation but his mother insists it has made a difference. BOGGART Right now it would probably being told he failed his Charms NEWT. But sometimes it's being told he's being denied something because he's a squib (i.e. being kicked out of school, not getting a job). PATRONUS A goose, if he could produce one. PET None. COURSES Arithmancy, History of Magic, Potions, Charms, Ancient Runes, and Astronomy BEST SUBJECT History of Magic WORST SUBJECT Charms
PERSONALITY
Leo is an odd duck. With his eccentric, almost obsessive attitude about rules and keeping toes in line, most students find him a laughably annoying Prefect. Leo knows this, though he's grown accustomed and almost callous to it. He's never set sights on being popular. And he feels that though he may be a diffcult person to most, it's a sacrafice you simply have to make to make sure things get done the right way. The way they ought to be done. As a Prefect, he feels it's an obligation to make sure everything is just as the rules say they should be. Though on paper, Leo may seem like a stern and possibly intimidating kid the way his mother is, he's really not at all. He can't seem to pull off making many of his peers take him seriously. No, Leo's pettiness and tendency for exaggerated facial expressions make much more of a Barney Fife than a Vic Mackey. Leo's demeanor is just too quirky and laughable to ever be taken seriously most of the time. Many students are likely easily swayed into believing Leo simply wants everyone else to be as miserable as they perceive him to be but this isn't true. Rules are like a religion to Leo. A world where everyone colors perfectly in the lines and not a hair is askew is the one he deeply desires to live in. Things just feel so much safer and comfortable when there's order, granted Leo takes it to an extreme. So Leo ends up projecting this ideal view onto others to cope with his need for structure. It's pretty easy to irritate Leo. He isn't a very patient boy. Persnickety, too. He's very picky about how he likes things done and tends to hold his standards towards other people as well. This also contributes greatly to his unpopularity. And it's easy to get impatient with LEO when he insists on spending way too much time doing a tedious task such as picking out his clothes for the day. One of the easiest ways to irritate Leo, it seems, is to say something obviously ignorant. Which will lead to him feeling obligated to then properly educate the person on their woeful wrongness. He isn't trying to be obnoxious when he does so. He's not even trying to put the other person down most of the time either. It's almost like a compulsion for Leo to right wrongs wherever he see them because they just bother him. He's the type of boy to straighten picture frames as he passes them by even if it's not his house. To be honest, Leo probably enjoys his books and research more than he enjoys most people. It isn't impossible to win his approval but it's rare, especially with his peers. He's very much an avid reader. He loves history particularly and facts. He can learn most anything very well on paper. But Leo isn't a good wizard. A smart wizard, by all means. Leo struggles quite a bit with the pratical side of magic. Conjuring charms, casting spells -- none of it's Leo's cup of tea. On really bad days, he can only manage making sparks. But there's no denying that despite his high aptitude for written and theoretical work and a relatively pure-ish background, Leo's abilities dwindle considerably when it comes to performing actual magic. He isn't a squib, of course, but it wouldn't be completely off to call him squib-ish due to the fact that there's no real reason he shouldn't be able to perform well. And when it's there it's not much to brag about either. He actually failed his Transfiguration OWL which was a traumatizing experience for him. He only kept Charms at his mother's insistence that he try and keep his course load at least a little balanced. He reached just barely a passing grade for the class at OWL level because of high grades on his essays and tests. Leo feels understandably insecure and shameful about his lack of ability in this area and not to mention the fact that it's hard to hide in a school setting where practicing during class is a must. He would like it very much to be a tightly kept secret but that's just not possible. He's grown pretty used to the harsh insults students will throw at him. Really, it's the failure to meet his own expectations that upsets him. In this way, Leo can be his own worst enemy because he beats himself for being inadequate at something he really can't help much. Most of all, though, he hates the fact that it must greatly disappoint his mum who is a very conservative witch that he expects gives her a hard time dealing with her son's disability. When it comes to feelings of attraction, Leo treats women like an allergy. Really, it's not so irrational of a reaction when you think of how much the boy loves rationality. Feelings of sexuality are more uncomfortable for Leo than most because they're so damned hard to control. And being a teenage boy puts him in the illest position to feel in control. Ironically, Lillith Tatting often fears the cause of her son's weird behavior around women is because he's gay. The real reason for his extreme phobia of females is actually an anxiety issue. Leo tries to glaze over sexuality whenever he can and just pretend it doesn't exist. Thinking about it possibly the quicket way to make him uncomfortable. His mother, on the other hand, is maintaining a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in regards to his lack of a girlfriend or any interest in trying to get one. Needless to say, he has no experience with girls in a romantic sense. Leo has always been an obvious Ravenclaw. He values reason and wit above all else and has his nose stuck in a book constantly. The Hat definitely didn't take long to place him with the eagles. Slythern probably would have been the first fallback for a secondary House for for single-mindedness and ambition towards academia. Next would come Hufflepuff for work ethic. Gryffindor would be the most unlikely because while Leo can easily confront others, he's very much a coward when it comes to dealing with his own fears and issues.
HOME LIFE
PARENTS Owen Reginald Tatting (65, Owner of Twilfit & Tatting's, Former Ravenclaw) Lillith Evelyn Tatting nee Beckham (43, Rotating Manager of the London branch of Twilfit and Tatting's, Former Slytherin)SIBLINGS Olivia Lillith Tatting (15, 5th Year Ravenclaw) OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS Paternal Second Cousin: Isobel "Hailey" Macmillan RESIDENCE London, England. HISTORY Lillith was cordial with most of the other Slytherins. Being a Halfblood did make things difficult, however, and she ended up not being close to an awful lot of people. She didn't mind this for most of her education as she was always very independent, even in her younger years. Though during the year of the battle, tensions were high and the Carrows certainly didn't treat one of the non-Purebloods well. Parts of the House seemed to be resigning to the possibility that the Wizarding World may fall to Voldemort's power. Lillith managed to graduate relatively untraumatised, though. She didn't fight in the Battle of Hogwarts because she really didn't have a reason to. Lillith and her family (despite the spot on their family tree) are strictly conservative and participating in such an event would have been an out of character thing for her. They did not support Voldemort, but they weren't about to let their daughter fight in a dangerous battle over it. It wasn't worth the risk to them. But the Second War certainly took it's toll on the Lillith's family financially. The family was ironically accused of associating with Death Eaters and supporting them in exchange for protection. This complication arose out of a blunder the Beckham's made in attempting to alter their documentatio to get rid of the spot of impurity that made Lillith technically a Halfblood. It was done more out of fear that eventually Halfbloods would be discriminated against with the new rising regime. The family was never wealthy but they were comfortable before the Second War. After all was said and done they were suddenly struggling to make ends meet. As the oldest, Lillith felt much of the strain trying to keep her family above water financially. The stigma of having had a branch of the family associated with Death Eaters made employment extremely difficult for the younger generations while the older ones took pay cuts because of the struggling post-war economy. Enter Owen Tatting, the Owner of Twilfitt & Tatting's who Lillith managed to get hired by a few years after the war. In his forties, Owen was already a divorcee and facing the dilemma of not having been successful in producing children from his last marriage. He wanted to continue his family line, possibly someone to leave the store to, though that was not his only motivation. Lillith impressed him and she had a great respect for him. It was a relationship that evolved partly out of convenience and the two could admit that to themselves. But there was a level of attraction between the two of them and after having been married for a while, they could say truthfully they were in love. Lillith was able to allow herself and her family to not only be comfortable but well-off. As the oldest child, she was willing to make the various sacrafices that marrying Owen came with for her family including having children (which she wasn't so sure she'd ever want to or be good at) and the gossip of being essentially a gold digger. Truthfully, Owen's family would have preferred him wedding someone with a better reputation but they were satisfied with the fact that Lillith was conservative enough to exude their values. Leo's childhood was adequate. It was bit isolated since his parents decided that one-on-one preschool tutoring would be best and since he was never really very social he didn't have many friends to speak of even before going to Hogwarts. This didn't bother him and though his parents were at first pleased with how much he was willing to sit and learn they recognized it was to unusual extent when he got a bit older. His mother tried to arrange playdates for him which went awkward at best. Leo wasn't a very compromising playmate and most times blatantly ignored the children sent over to their house. As a result, Leo's oddness was almost exaggerated by his limited interaction with his peers. He was labeled early as the class weirdo on the train for vocalizing his disapproval of arbitrary things like noise-level. He quickly became known as a tattle-tale and paid prices higher than just being unpopular. He's been hexed quite a few times and verbally brutalised though it didn't stop him from tattling. In reality, Leo and Lillith's relationship is better than one might expect given the few tensions between them. Leo is actually something of a Mama's Boy, if anything. Truthfully, there's quite a bit of Lillith in Leo. Lillith isn't blind to that fact that her son isn't as socially, erm, graceful as most but she admires his particular nature, his unwillingness to settle for second best, and how seriously he takes his grades and his Prefecting. She's proud that he's a serious and obedient young man. She was a little disturbed by his lack of magical ability, but she's actually come to terms with it pretty well. After all, he's not a squib and there are plenty of ways he can contribute to wizarding society without needing a high level magical ability. She really hopes he's not gay, though. When it comes to his father, Leo gets on with him fine but they don't have a very close relationship mostly due to the large generation gap and different personalities. For this year, Leo's life is consumed by studying for NEWTs. He's pretty confident he will do well in everything except Charms which is causing his considerable anxiety. Even though he doesn't plan on doing anything that will involve this class and it's more for making his application look good, he's devestated by the thought of having another failure on his record. |
